If you’re a female executive, you may wonder how you can take your career to the next level. Women at the vice president and director levels don’t always get the mentoring and coaching that both men and women at the president or CEO level receive. At a time in their careers when they most need support and strategy, they often feel isolated, and as a result, stuck.
When I was chairing the Women Presidents’ Organization, I noticed this problem. I wondered what could be done for the women working hard to climb the ladder to the corner office. I was an executive coach, and most of my clients were upper level executives.
At the same time, I kept running into women who had been laid off from VP and director level jobs. Several asked me for mentoring and help.
In that moment, Executive Jane was born. We began meeting as a coaching group. I led it, but the women also supported and encouraged one another. The energy that came from meeting as a group and realizing that they had similar struggles helped those women to overcome and move forward.
Within a year, all of those women had landed good jobs. I’d like to think my coaching helped them—and indeed it did. But being in a group of women multiplied the impact of my mentoring.
Executive Jane is now in its sixth year. I’m excited to launch our new website and to announce that we are creating new groups where women at the vice president and director level can come together, receive coaching and mentoring, and also help one another to get “unstuck” and find solutions to the challenges they face.
In fact, our meetings include a time for women to talk about where they are stuck in their leadership, careers, and so on. The group asks clarifying questions, gives feedback. The result? Women begin to see solutions they otherwise might have missed. They get unstuck. And they grow in confidence and strength, knowing they’ve got a group of like-minded women who support and cheer them on.
“Executive Jane is a powerful multi-sided mirror,” Stacy French Reynolds, a financial advisor and member of the group, says. “The women in the group reflect back to me things about myself I struggle to see and give me the courage to become who I truly am. It is a place to be pushed and to be supported. My participation has made a tremendous difference in how I live my life and pursue my goals.”
Executive Jane is a peer group where we challenge leaders to be authentic, to define their leadership, to talk about their issues and move forward to the next level. Our members include executives from a variety of business sectors, as well as independent business owners. What they have in common is that they are women leaders who want to be intentional about their careers, but also want to be a part of a transformational community where they feel safe and supported.
Executive Jane groups meet monthly. In addition to peer feedback, I offer leadership development coaching and mentoring. We invite speakers or have an expert panel to address issues that matter to our members.
Another unique benefit: our annual three-day retreat, in which the group goes off site for an incredible experience that strengthens the heart and soul of their leadership.
What you can expect if you join an Executive Jane group:
- Freedom from isolation and a connection to a network of women executives and trusted advisors
- Wisdom and collective knowledge to bring synergy to your highest priority issues
